The site of Kafr ʿAqab, located in the limestone massif of Northern Syria, in the North of Gebel Wastani extends on a rocky promontory overlooking the ʿAzmarin plain and the Orontes Valley. The ruins reveal a large village that was inhabited from the Roman through Medieval periods. Among the religious buildings established on the outskirts of the town, the Eastern Basilica is studied in detail. The monument, built in the 6th cent., is one of the great pilgrimage pillared churches typical of the region and its plan bears interesting architectural features. The building is included within a church complex, whose poorly preserved remains are limited to a western building equipped with a large cistern. To the south side, a large area, fitted up for the reception of pilgrims, precedes the sanctuary. An inscription on a boundary-stone found about 800 m south bears witness to the asylum granted by the Emperor Anastasius. This article includes five other unpublished inscriptions found on the spot.
