The Breve discorso di quanto avvene alle reverendissime suore di San Mattia et San Luca, monasterij uniti dell'anno 1573, a manuscript composed by the Dominican nun Diodata Malvasia, narrates the efforts of the women of these two Bolognese convents to resist post-Tridentine forced enclosure and to maintain their governance over the iconic Madonna of San Luca. This previously unstudied chronicle represents only the second known work by the author of La venuta et i progressi miracolosi della santissima Madonna dipinta da San Luca, and indeed Malvasia indicates she completed the Breve discorso in 1575, thus predating her later publication by forty years. The value of this earlier document as a literary and rhetorical tool provides us with the opportunity to reconsider Malvasia's later work as part of a lifelong project of literary resistance
