The following brief studies concerning the relationship between Dante's COMEDY and the third book of the CONVIVIO were delivered as papers at the annual colloquium of the Society for Italian Studies on 6 January 1979. All four contributors had the good fortune to prepare their doctoral theses under the supervision of Father Kenelm Foster, and their papers were conceived as a corporate act of homage and affection to mark his retirement from his post as Reader in Italian in the University of Cambridge on 30 September 1978. The editors join the contributors in extending to Father Foster their warmest wishes for a long, happy and fertile retirement
