NORMAN W. INGHAM (Chicago, IL, U.S.A.) ZEMLIA RUSSKAIA AND ZEMLIA POLOVETSKAIA IN THE POETIC STRUCTURE OF SLOVO O POLKU IGOREVE "Solntse svietitsia na nebesie; Igor' kniaz' v" ruskoi zemli" (The sun is shining in the sky; Prince Igor' is in the Rus' land) (211}.' With this juxta- position of simple and apparently banal declarations the poet of the Slovo 0 polku Igoreve abruptly announces at.the. close that Igor' has returned from captivity in the steppe-from the Polovtsy land into the Rusian land. The pair of short and balanced clauses, asyndetically joined, is, however, any- thing but simple in its associations
