Matthias Wegner introduces the exile novel in the closing chapter of his book on exile literature.1 His analyses of Lion Feuchtwanger's Exil, Anna Seghers' Transit, Klaus Mann's Der Vulkan, and Walter Hasenclever's Die Rechtlosen are undertaken to promote further comparative investigation into a body of novels reflecting a clearly defined theme, one in which the exile of German intellectuals in 1933 becomes historically identifiable.
