This volume of essays includes contributions from professors and graduate students in the field of Germanistik or German Studies. Preliminary versions of these essays were delivered at two closely coordinated symposia, sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and held in the Fall of 1988. The contributions represent the response of scholars of German - from a variety of critical perspectives - to the ongoing canon debate; the closely related issue of representing culture (Kultur) also comes under consideration in several of the essays
