Although the French Resistance has formed the subject of a considerable amount of secondary literature, certain aspects of it remain ‘blind spots’ (Laurent Douzou). One key merit of the work written by François Romon is that he sheds some light on some of these blind spots. The reader grasps the subject of the book from its very first pages, as it illuminates the paths taken by a group of French army communications officers (including the author’s father) and their assistants through the heart of the Resistance. This topic is discussed in a wide-reaching thematic and methodological way, including military and intelligence history, as well as the history of technology and public administration. In addition, the text is interspersed with some welcome reminders of the global history of the Second World War, which add meaning to the development of the officers studied during the Resistance, and allow the reader to link the author’s narrative to the wider context of the conflict.
