The ‘rise of Muslim antisemitism’ and the ‘importation of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict’ frequently make French headlines. Writing a book on such a loaded topic is not easy, and Maud Mandel’s Muslims and Jews in France offers some much-needed historical subtlety, wisely steering away from narratives of either total conflict or total harmony between the two communities. While the title ‘history of a conflict’ might raise suspicion for the prospective reader, Mandel’s case is more sophisticated. While she initially wanted to write a book dismissing the narrative of conflict that is relentlessly pushed by the media, in the process of research, she had to come to terms with the very power of this narrative itself. Starting in 1948 and taking the reader into the late 1980s, Mandel shows how a nuanced social reality has been overshadowed by a mounting discourse of polarization. Partly, this is because Jews and Muslims underwent an ‘asymmetrical integration’ into the post-war Republic. Even Jews arriving from North Africa in the 1950s and 1960s had better access to state resources than Muslims, due to the enduring legacy of colonial inequalities and the presence of established Jewish institutions. For instance, when North African Jews arrived in Marseille, they were housed in the Grand Arénas transit camp—hardly luxurious accommodation. But Muslims in the same period did not have access to even this temporary housing and crowded in unstructured bidonvilles around the camp.
