After her book on the ‘making of saint Louis’ and her edition of previously unpublished liturgical sources concerning Louis IX of France, M. Cecilia Gaposchkin provides us again with material for the study of this king (r. 1226–70). Her companions in this task are Sean F. Field, also well known for his various works on ‘capetian sanctity’, and Larry F. Field who translated the texts into English for the first time. The first vita was composed by Louis’ confessor Geoffrey of Beaulieu, a Dominican friar, nearly immediately after his death in order to fuel a canonization process; translations of Boniface VIII’s canonization bull and of three letters from the 1270s further illustrate this process. The second vita was written shortly after by William of Chartres, a chaplain in the king’s service who had also joined the Dominican order. Both lives have been used to compile other vitae throughout the later middle ages. Printed for the first time in 1617, there is no modern critical edition of the texts after their inclusion in the Recueil des Historiens de Gaule et de la France in 1840. Given the thorough work that has been done on the two manuscripts containing the texts (Paris, BnF, Ms. lat. 13778 for both, and Ms. lat. 18335 for Geoffrey), the balanced translations revised in teamwork and the detailed and sound annotations, it is a pity that the editors did not include the Latin texts, but everyone can access them via http://gallica.bnf.fr/ and make use of the editors’ emendations.
