Dale Van Kley’s contribution to our understanding of the continued importance of religion in the Age of Enlightenment needs no introduction. In the final quarter of the twentieth century, beginning in 1975 with his monograph on the expulsion of the Jesuits, he produced a series of seminal books and articles which argued strongly that Jansenism played a key role in France in undermining respect for the crown and the absolute monarchy. In the last twenty years, he has extended his argument to the rest of Europe, Britain and the Americas and made a powerful case for religious nonconformity in various guises being at the heart of movements for reform and revolution in the eighteenth-century tout court. In so doing, he has constructed an account of Enlightenment and its consequences, which clashes completely with Jonathan Israel’s description of a Spinozist movement characterized by atheism, materialism and secularism. Van Kley accepts the existence of an atheistical Enlightenment but limits its significance to France and sees it as just one of several otherwise religiously inspired movements of light challenging the status quo.
