Universities have always been urban institutions and part of the urban landscape. However, as the editors of this volume of essays rightly point out, the relationship between the university and the town has yet to be closely explored. An important collection of essays on the topic was published in 1988 by Thomas Bender and several interesting accounts of town-gown relations in specific universities and at specific moments have appeared in the journal History of Universities, but otherwise the larder is bare. Only the relationship between the city and university of Oxford has been studied across the longue durée in the multi-volume and multi-authored History of the University of Oxford. The volume under review, devoted as it is to the early-modern period and consisting of only seven essays, makes no pretence to fill the gap. Its principal intention as its introduction, conclusion and ‘postface’ make clear is to demonstrate that this is a question that historians of higher education should pursue. The relationship between the two is instructive and dynamic: it differs according to the size and character of the town and is continually changing in the light of political, religious and intellectual developments.
