This paper attempts to give a general overview of developments in Malaysia in 1977 with special emphasis on the political aspect. The paper would therefore deal mainly with politics within the National Front (NF or Barisan Nasional) coalition and its various component parties. Economic and foreign affairs are also briefly examined. The year 1977 has been a stirring one for Malaysian politics. It will be known eventually, it seems to me, as the year in which the four-year-old NF was put to severe test. Disputes within most of the parties which constitute the eleven-party coalition, rivalries among them and their individual and collective response to the opposition have dominated politics for the best part of the year
