L'A. affirme que les modeles occidentaux de domestication cognitive de l'Orient islamique valent la peine d'etre analyses a travers les deplacements historiques majeurs des modeles d'essentialisation. En reconstruisant cette trajectoire de l'essentialisme, l'A. porte son attention sur Max Weber et son traitement de l'islam dans sa sociologie comparee des religions. Il analyse la crise finale de l'equilibre mis en place par Weber dans l'hermeneutique islamique. Cette crise a ouvert de nouvelles manieres de penser ou de repenser l'islam bien qu'on ait pas trouve de nouvel equilibre
