Le poète Ovide est aussi, à sa manière, un historien ; si le long développement consacré aux Lupercales peut sembler fantaisiste, il témoigne toutefois de son érudition et rend compte de l’évolution de la cérémonie, du temps mythique des origines à sa restauration augustéenne : en entrelaçant passé et présent dans le cadre intemporel du calendrier, l’histoire des Lupercales donne aussi à lire celle de Rome, de sa fondation à l’âge d’or ouvert par Auguste
