Jaime Alvar, An unsuccessful essay : « Atheology » as a discourse of atheism, DHA 32/2, 2006, 125-137. Abstract: This paper welcomes a new treatise apparently devoted to the creation of the science of atheism. A closer analysis reveals important mistakes in more than one level. On the one hand, historical problems are to be found, mainly due to the authors lack of accurate information about Biblical Literature, Ancient History or the History of Religions. On the other hand, it is obvious that the apparent aim of this work -the creation of a postchristian episteme- is not even taken into account. The work is just a sort of diatribe against monotheisms, and more specifically against Christianity (as it is the religious system to which a higher number of pages are devoted). Onfray seems to forget that there have been, and there are currently many scholars involved in the construction of an antireligious criticism: their works are simply ignored in his work. His views about religion, furthermore, are all the more surprising, as he seems to ignore its deep connections to cultural and historical processes. Even though criticism is badly needed in this field of knowledge, this book lacks conceptual and analytical denseness. To sum up, the highly desirable making of a postchristian episteme is still waiting for the arrival of her author
