NotesR.E. Bennett first noted the pun in the Diary (“John Manningham and Donne’s Paradoxes.” Modern Language Notes 46 [1931], 309).The DNB cautions that Armstrong may not have been connected with the publication of A Choice Banquet (“But the appearance of Armstrong’s name on the title-page was probably a bookseller’s device; the fact that he was still alive in Cumberland is a certain proof that he was in no way connected with the publication of the work”); however, the British Museum General Catalogue of Printed Books, Donald Wing’s Short-Title Catalogue, the Henry E. Huntington Library card catalog, and the National Union Catalogue of Pre-1956 Imprints list Armstrong as the author of the material in the volume
