Union women shouldered a heavy burden during and after the Civil War. The far-reaching social and economic impacts of the war on the Union home front transformed, momentarily, gender roles, but Union victory ultimately overshadowed the suffering and sacrifice at home championing instead a narrative of patriotism and perseverance. Utilizing pension records, this article explores the impact of death on families at home. It expands our understanding of the far-reaching and, at times, devastating implications of the Civil War on those who remained at home while offering an important counterbalance to the much-heralded historical narrative of the public patriotism of northern women and the general stability of the northern home front
