The learning of Modern Foreign Languages in the UK in schools and universities is generally acknowledged to be in a state of crisis. This article charts briefly the dimensions of this crisis and then turns to our understanding of Modern Foreign Languages as an academic discipline. It begins by tracing the origins of this discipline and then considers what should constitute the essential components of this discipline today. It concludes that the study of language must be at the heart of the discipline and must include a range of competences. Also essential is an awareness of the linguistic structure of the language acquired through the study of linguistics, which should also inform language teaching methodology. Lastly, it should include the study of creative literature in the foreign language, which is language-dependent culture par excellence, not only because of its role in the determination of the linguistic standard and the advantages it offers in language learning in terms of motivation and the teaching of language skills, but because its artistry provokes reflection on the use of language in many different ways
