Beyond differences in cinematic vocabulary, four Spanish filmmakers belonging to successive generations (Pere Portabella, Víctor Erice, José Luis Guerin, and Isaki Lacuesta) exhibit in their work a common creative trend: not only do they practise an ‘expanded cinema’, but also, in one way or another, they engage with myth as a place of mediation between history and dream. The aim of these filmmakers as artists could be defined as a deep commitment to seeking out and opening up new pathways that push the filmic experience beyond its conventional boundaries. In this context, cultural continuity and narrative experimentation are linked, offering the spectator a new way of engaging with the medium
