The Cuban writer, critic, folklorist, and diplomat, José María Chacón y Calvo (1882–1969) arrived in Madrid in 1918, and in that city he befriended Spanish intellectuals of his time. In 1922 he met Federico García Lorca and the two men quickly became fast friends. When Lorca visited Cuba in 1930, it was Chacón y Calvo who showed him Havana and who presented him at an important lecture in Caibarién. The surviving correspondence from Chacón to Lorca, in great part unedited until now, spans the years 1922 to 1927. The seventeen letters, cards, and signed photograph are presented here in chronological order with extensive notes on their contents. In the correspondence, Chacón writes of the Concurso de Cante Jondo, Lorca's Libro de poemas, the establishing of a Society of Friends of Art in Madrid, of his trips through Spain and Italy, of the 1926 hurricane which wreaked havoc in Cuba, and of mutual friends, Luis Buñuel, Manuel de Falla, Jorge Guillén, Eugenio d'Grs, Emilio Prados, Margarita Xirgu, and others. The Cuban writer, critic, folklorist, and diplomat, José María Chacón y Calvo (1882–1969) arrived in Madrid in 1918, and in that city he befriended Spanish intellectuals of his time.
