Bilateral relations between grand lodges were intensifying from the middle of the nineteenth century onwards. Spanish freemasonry was expanding during the Glorious Revolution, which would last until the end of the century, with multiple grand orients competing for the same jurisdiction. During this period the Gran Oriente Nacional of Spain (GONE) requested the recognition of the most important Masonic power, the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE), but was rejected in all its attempts. This article presents the approaches made by the GONE and studies the reasons for the UGLE’s rejection. In addition, it also analyses English Freemasonry’s international stance, which led to the decision, and especially its stance with regard to continental Freemasonry
