The measures addressed to manage the return of the Jewish conversos to Spain after July 1492 were not some sort of improvisation. They were the result, as asserted here, of an old debate: that of nobility. For that reason, this paper begins by showing how much the intellectual leader of the 1449’s Toledan revolt, Marcos García de Mora, was in debt to the 1440’s vernacular debate on that subject that originated with Alonso de Cartagena’s Basel discourse (and how much he wanted to establish a new and revolutionary standard based on it). After that, the article goes on to examine Cartagena’s answer to García de Mora; a short one on the issue that he contributed to initiating, because his rereading of all those works he inspired made him discover two institutions to explain the Jew’s redemption from their servitude, marriage and postliminy, that structure the main argument of his Defensorium unitatis christianae. And no other institution but postliminy, it is stated finally, can make us understand the legal measures that guided the conversos’ way home
