Back to Multi-Generational Families? Chances and Limits of Collective Housing from a Sociological Perspective Over the coming years, the number of older people will increase in Germany – absolutely as well as in relation to the overall population. This article discusses alternatives to family and professional care or support arrangements within the context of dwindling family resources. The focus is, inter alia, on types of community living, in which assistance is performed as part of a mutual exchange between the residents. The paper provides an overview of various forms of age-based housing and the housing requirements of older people. This article then examines the discrepancy between the attention given to community living arrangements in the media, on the one hand, and their acceptance by the target group and their quantitative distribution, on the other. The paper closes with a plea for a re-conceptualization of community-related housing that overcomes the boundaries of housing projects and permeates residential neighbourhoods
