Self-employed Teachers in the Education Sector Self-employed teachers and scientists are working to a great extent in the sector of tertiary and quaternary education. As university lecturers or freelance teachers in public or private adult education centres, they contribute substantially to achieving the business purpose, without being considered as members of the group of employees. The analysis of data provided by a qualitative study on in-plant co-determination with regard to (denied) company membership of those self-employed teachers and its consequences revealed that exclusion was in fact perceived and was regarded as a problem. Notably the absence of protection through labour law of those who are nominally regarded as self-employed while being structurally inferior shows need for action. Further research is required in reference to the mechanisms and discourses of exclusion and the simultaneously excluding and binding operation of power
