The question of the naturalness of science and religion is aptly specified by McCauley in the following terms: how do the thoughts or cognitive processes that are characteristic of a cultural domain (science and religion in McCauley’s book) relate to evolved cognition? Evolution endowed humans with specific cognitive abilities that increased the fitness of their bearers by solving problems they faced in their evolutionary environment. These evolved abilities process inputs from specific domains and produce inferentially enriched representations at very little cognitive cost
