Abstract: The aim of a preacher is the conversion of judgments and behaviours. The tool of successful preaching is the efficacious word. The Jesuits, in keeping with classic and modern rhetoric, knew that words had the power to touch and move the hearer’s psychic disposition. In Aristotle and Aquinas’ philosophical psychology, the human soul is structured in external and internal sensorial potencies, affections, cognitive faculty and volition. The preacher’s words must move these potencies, also known as internal senses, which produce the immaterial objects that are closely linked to things in the world and through which the understanding can identify and abstract the nature of things. In the Sermao da Oitava da Pascoa of 1656, preached by Antonio Vieira in Belem, all these elements converge to induce the ‘desengano’ (‘disenchantment’). According to him, the sadness for not finding mines should be turned into happiness for preserving the true good of the Portuguese Kingdom, the souls
