Le Local Community Research Committee, la recherche sur projet et l'« âge d'or » de la sociologie de Chicago (1923-1930)

Le Local Community Research Committee, mis en place à l’université de Chicago par une des fondations Rockefeller en 1923 et fermé en 1930, est sans doute un des premiers dispositifs de recherche sur projet conçu comme tel. Il fut mis en place autour d’un accord entre les professeurs et les autorités de l’université et de la fondation pour réformer la recherche en sciences sociales en vue de la rendre utile aux élites réformatrices de la « communauté ». C’est dans cette perspective que objets de recherche de Park, Burgess et leurs assistants furent choisis. Mais l’accord fondateur fut bientôt mis en cause : les problèmes étaient désormais définis à l’échelle de la nation et non plus de la ville et les méthodes devaient être fondées sur le chiffre et la mesure. La « communauté locale » cessait donc d’être un objet pertinent. Pour imposer cette nouvelle approche, la gestion du programme fut retirée aux départements et confiée à un petit comité qui concentra les ressources sur de nouveaux thèmes. Ainsi fut-il mis un terme à ce qui est communément regardé comme un « âge d’or » de la sociologie de Chicago
