This article explores the notion of the “genius” of the Creole language through a historical, lexical, and symbolic lens. Drawing on Enlightenment thinkers from the 18th to the 19th century, it examines the interplay between linguistic structure and cultural identity. The analysis reveals a fluctuating use of the term “genius,” oscillating between linguistic specificity and cultural essence. Ultimately, it questions the capacity of Creole to reflect a distinct spirit born of colonial hybridity
