The ASAANZ conference in Dunedin in 2023 was a catalyst for this conversation about anthropological practices of interdisciplinarity which we have glossed as working across different epistemic cultures. In this piece, we canvas the concept of disciplines as epistemic cultures, argue for the continued need for disciplines, and discuss the benefits of engagement across epistemic cultures when addressing certain research, policy and educational matters. We develop arguments about anthropology’s ability to engage in the mixing of disciplines, confess that it is not all plain sailing, and respond to challenges about the worth of this enterprise. We chose this semi-fictional panel format to echo the ways this conversation unfolded for us, and we hope it weaves its way into how people are already talking, thinking about, and navigating, these issues
