Historians of France have shown a long-lasting fascination with France’s regional diversity. Research into regional politics, culture, exhibitions and tourism has underlined the important place that rootedness in local place played in creating a sense of ‘Frenchness’, and revealed France’s regions to have been a significant motive force in the construction of the French nation. Recent regional histories have continued to offer new ways of thinking about France by encouraging us to consider regions—and particularly border regions—as sites of contact and conflict, characterized by the flow of people, goods, ideas and cultural artefacts, and by thinking comparatively about the points of comparison and contrast between distinct national and regional experiences. Each of the books under discussion here can be considered part of this new movement in regional histories of France, and each offers a distinct contribution to the literature.
