In this paper we analyze lead musket balls, which were used with smoothbore muzzle-loading guns, from sites related to the wars between Buenos Aires and the Argentine Confederation. The studied artifacts come both from sites that were occupied by only one of the armies (Loma Negra for Buenos Aires, Campamento Calá for the Confederation), and from the Cepeda (1859) and Pavón (1861) battlefields. Through archaeological and historical research we determined that both sides largely used weapons of two calibers, which correspond in general terms to the British Brown Bess and French Charleville gun families. Thus, the paper significantly contributes both to the knowledge of a key historical period, and to the study of XIXth century battlefields
