This essay deals with the hitherto neglected literary and aesthetic merits of Rahel Varnhagen, especially the links she established between two forms of literary communication, combining the social life of the salon and the art of letter-writing. It shows that with her salon as well as with the specific functionalisation of the letter that she undertook Rahel Varnhagen not only used those methods of communication that were available to her as a woman and a Jewess, but that by closely combining these two media she in addition developed a literary aesthetic of her own, which is what is to be considered truly innovative and modern about her activities
