Epidemiology studies the distribution, determinants, and consequences of health and disease. It relies on empirical data to answer questions of how much disease there is, what factors put communities at risk, and how severe the outcomes are in patient populations, in order to inform public health policy‐making. The recent emergence of computational epidemiology makes use of the big data generated by the communication and information technologies to better explain, predict, and control disease outbreaks. Epidemiologists also examine disparities in health and healthcare across racial, socioeconomic, and gender groups and apply epidemiological methods and models to understand social problems. As an interdisciplinary field, epidemiology is closely intertwined with social sciences
