Voluntary organizations are also referred to as nonprofits, NGOs, third sector organizations, and civil society organizations. These are organizations independent of government and the market. While the structure and function of these vary widely, they all have in common a nonprofit distribution principle and a social mission. Second, voluntary organizations do not normally create a direct revenue stream, and thus remain dependent on other sectors for financial resources. They do, however, generate considerable social capital in support of their mission. While some voluntary organizations form strong corporate and business structures, others focus on advocacy and online activism with little formal structure
