Classical political economy represents the earliest phase in the development of economics spanning the late eighteenth century to the second half of the nineteenth century since Adam Smith and his economic work the Wealth of Nations (preceded by his philosophical and psychological Theory of Moral Sentiments ). In addition to Smith, as the widely recognized founder, its other key members include David Ricardo, Jean‐Baptiste Say, Thomas Malthus, William Senior, Augustine Cournot, John S. Mill, Karl Marx, and John Cairnes. Classical political economy is typically defined by its representatives as the science of the production, distribution, exchange, and consumption of wealth
