Secularization expresses the advancing “emancipation” of the secular from institutional religion in modern societies. These societies are primarily differentiated along functional lines that overlay the prior forms of segmentary and social class differentiation and have developed different subsystems (e.g., economy, polity, family, and education). These subsystems perform their own particular function. As far as institutional religion is concerned, they claim their autonomy and reject religiously prescribed rules. This is not a mechanical process but the result of conflicting viewpoints between politicians, professionals, persons, and clergy. The presentation in this entry is analytical and discusses studies of secularization on the societal (macro), organizational (meso), and individual (micro) levels, indicating the reciprocal impact of changes on these levels
