Sociology of medicine is a label distinguishing the work of the medical sociologist based upon the goals, setting, and disciplinary context of the work. Sociology of medicine uses sociological inquiry to examine the medical system as a social institution, focusing on organizational and professional structure, roles, and values, on functions of medicine, and on the social psychology of health and illness. The sociologist of medicine typically works within an academic setting, using a sociological perspective to study medicine, health, and illness. This distinguishing term was first published by Robert Straus in 1957
