Kinsey was a pioneer of early research into sexuality and, though a biologist, he provided some of the earliest statements about how sexuality was shaped by social forces. In this entry Kinsey's sociological contribution to the study of sexuality is suggested; and some key findings and ideas outlined (such as the six‐point homosexual continuum). Kinsey's work was controversial but it has had significant impact upon modern culture. Critical problems, including those suggested by feminists, are also raised
