African Americans have been active producers throughout the history of the United States; however, during most of this history, their role in such capacities has been ignored, lost, destroyed, excluded, omitted, sporadically documented, or contained in books read by an elite few. This research reveals critical moments in U.S. history when African Americans contributed to the field of instructional technology and the nature of those contributions. In particular, this study examines The Freedman's Torchlight1 (TFT) (American Missionary Association, 1866/1980), a newspaper textbook, to ascertain elements of the design that are culturally and racially specific. Moreover, this research is undergirded by a desire to document the ways in which African Americans have been active participants in educating themselves and to support the inclusion of African American instructional materials into the field of instructional technology
