The influx of new immigrants from Latin America and Asia has changed communities throughout the country. This immigration has dramatically altered the ethnic composition of many neighborhoods. As a result, shifting cultural and ethnic diversity is changing the dynamics of community life in America. Warren (1978) defined community as combination of social units and systems that perform the major social functions having locality relevance (p. 9). The term community implies something both geographic and psychologic. Geographically it identifies a specific cluster of individuals, whereas psychologically it indicates shared interests, shared social characteristics, and social interaction. However, mere geographic proximity of residence or similar interests do not in and of themselves make a community. Frequency and intensity of interaction and segregation of association are the main ingredients determining community identity. Proximity and shared interests are unimportant unless frequent close interaction is present (Hillery, 1955; Warren, 1978)
