For decades, criminal victimization has been an important subject of investigation for social and behavioral scientists. This importance is the result, in part, of the uneven distribution of actual victimization (Karmen, 1984, p. 50). Studies of criminal victimization show that males were victimized more than women, except for cases of rape and purse snatching; young persons, especially teenagers and adults in their early twenties, were the targets of criminal attack much more often than older people; divorced or separated people and those who had never married experienced far greater troubles than married couples or widowed persons; Black people were victimized more than Whites or members of other minority groups, except for crimes of theft; households with family incomes less than $7,500 were burdened much more often by burglary than households in higher income categories; city dwellers were the targets of criminal attack much more often than those living in suburban or rural areas; and suburban residents were victimized more often than residents of rural areas (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1986b).
