When the first Austronesians came to Borneo they had a significant influence from a linguistic point of view. However, their arrival is not marked by a sudden shift from hunting-gathering to a rice-based subsistence strategy. Agriculture was practised long before they reached the island, though evidence of full-scale rice cultivation in the interior is only a few centuries old. There is a high probability that mixed subsistence strategies including the cultivation of root crops, sago, rice, and hunting and gathering were practised over a long period of time in Borneo. Such mixed subsistence strategies are still practised today by some former hunting-gathering groups which adopted agriculture several decades ago in Borneo
