Questions of change and continuity are central to the disciplines of Politics and International Relations. They are especially salient in studies of domestic politics, foreign policies and international interaction in the era of the Former Soviet Union. The region’s turbulent history in the 20 century and the difficulty of reinventing and rediscovering nations in the post-Soviet area raise a myriad of intriguing questions. For example, what history is remembered, and how have dominant historical narratives evolved over time? How can we account for changes in electoral politics? How do post-Soviet states respond to on-going changes in the international environment? And, equally important, how can we as researchers address these issues when studying the region? It is these questions that lie at the heart of this special section
