The cinema of Catherine Breillat is noted for its violent and provocative investigations of human sexuality. While her 2001 film [Agrave] ma sœur! does indeed have much to say about the emergence of adolescent female desire and the betrayal of male romantic discourse, it interrogates more importantly the intrapsychic nature of sexual fantasy and experience through its recreation of the primal scene trauma. In its examination of the relationship between two adolescent sisters, one fat and one thin, the film asks us to consider another relationship as well: the voyeurism of the "fat girl" and our own spectatorial gaze at the brutality of the girls' sexual initiations
