Some Kuwaitis bought Kiawah Island in 1972. The island was subsequently developed by the Sea Pines Corporation which also is responsible for developing Hilton Head Island (S.C.) A tremendous controversy raged in Charleston about this purchase. The three major combatants in this dispute were the long-settled Sephardic Jewish community, the environmental ecology enthusiasts, and the Afro-American population. The three-way partition represented three widely divergent points of view and was resolved in a way. The ecologists had some of ,their habitats preserved and respected; the Jews were not barred from participation by the Arab ownership; and the Afro-Americans were guaranteed schooling and jobs. As a kid growing up on the islands in the thirties and forties, there was really no need for money. A lot of us now in our 30s and 40s are realizing we weren't so bad off then. When we were young we looked at things as being awful. Now that attitude has changed. When I was a kid we grew our own rice, we had our own grits grinder, and we made our own pestle and mortar with which to clean our rice (Parrish, 1942; Pennington, 1913). We had our own smokehouse, killed our own meat, and we ate everything that was in the river in season. This time of year now you can go anyplace and buy oysters. People then never ate
