The idea of a discipline of study is directly related to subject matter and methodology. In fact, the basic assumptions of any paradigm determine the subject matter and the appropriate methodology. The basic assumptions of the field variously called Black Studies, African American, and Africana Studies revolve around the concept of Afrocentricity.' Afrocentricity means using the life experiences of all people of African descent as the center of analysis. It emphasizes an analysis rooted in the historical reality of Black people. It does not negate or minimize the experience of other groups; rather its emphasis is on how those experiences have helped shape Black reality and vice versa. With that in mind, the following are suggested as the basic assumptions of the Black Studies discipline
African descent · Center (category theory) · Curriculum · Epistemology · Field (mathematics) · Paradigm shift · Pedagogy · Sociology · Subject (documents) · Subject matter · Anthropology · Computer Science · Mathematics · Philosophy · Race, History, and American Society
