A gathering of a large number of people, no matter for what purpose, provides opportunities for all manners of social interaction. This rather obvious fact inspired a project in applied anthropology in Bihar State, India, during the period 1974-75, under the auspices of the World Health Organization. The aim of the project was to trace the flow of information in a rural region, and subsequently to propose means of using existing information transmission patterns for the collection of information from, and the dissemination of information to, the population of a large region. I carried out a pilot project on the western side of the district of Singhbhum, in southern Bihar State. The area included 17 development blocks (thanas) centering on the regional and district headquarters in the town of Chaibasa, and a total of 1,905 villages
