Traditional Healers and Mental Illness in the City of Ibadan

In Nigeria today, as in many other African countries, traditional healing practices exist side by side with modern medical practice (Lambo, 1959 and 1961; Lucas and Hendrickse, 1966; Harding, 1973; Ademuwagun, 1976). Lambo (1959) indicated that in 1950 over 60% of the patients of a large general hospital in Western Nigeria were using both native and modern medicine on admission to the hospital. He attributed this pattern of behaviour to the ambivalence of the indigenous Nigerian about European methods of treatment. A similar observation of the traditional healthcare delivery system has been reported from many other African countries (Twumasi, 1972; Orley, 1970; Prince, 1975; Giel et al., 1968; Imperato, 1976).
