Comment définir l’humain à partir de sa diversité ? Questions épistémologiques et enjeux philosophiques

Depuis 1995, 15 nouvelles espèces ont été décrites dans le clade des hominines (comprenant l’ensemble des formes plus proches des humains actuels que des chimpanzés et bonobos actuels). Par une approche d’épistémologie et de philosophie des sciences, cette note montre que la diversité des hominines n’est pas seulement une donnée quantifiable, mais aussi un problème biologique et anthropologique. En retraçant l’histoire des débats sur la diversité humaine du passé et en analysant les différents biais qui influencent l’évaluation du nombre d’espèces d’hominines, je propose plusieurs pistes pour actualiser le cadre théorique de la paléoanthropologie : la critique du modèle buissonnant au profit d’un modèle réticulé d’évolution, la mise en évidence des présupposés philosophiques relatifs à la description systématique de nouvelles espèces d’hominines et une réflexion sur la dimension spécifiquement anthropologique de la diversité humaine du passé
