Publications about African countries often tend to be written by foreign journalists and other researchers who have a fleeting image of the countries. The foreign authors often given an exaggerated broad brush of political events and personalities, or else they tend to give stereotypical interpretations. Four books about Zambia published during the last four years change the picture. The four Zambian authors try to give a lucid inside view of the Zambian political and social history which gives a more accurate reflection of why Zambia is where it is now a rather strong, relatively stable, and politically vibrant country. An Extraordinary Life is by now an internationally acclaimed autobiography of the former Foreign Minister of Zambia, Vernon J. Mwaanga, who also served as his nation's representative at the United Nations. At twentyone years of age, one year after Zambia gained independence from British colonial rule in 1964, Mwaanga was appointed Zambian ambassador to Moscow. Three years later, he was appointed ambassador to the UN. Then he bacame Zambia's Foreign Minister. His forays in international diplomacy had solid results, and the personalities he encountered read like a who's who of the world. Within Zambia, he was once the Editor of the prestigious Times of Zambia national paper and went through at least three marriages, the latter perhaps not being one of his socially distinguished achievements. When he resigned from government, he became a prominent national and international businessman. Indeed, his career constitutes the stuff of which legends are made.
